On February 11, 2010, Doug Lanpher, Gamma/Vanderbilt ‘77 was unanimously elected the new Executive Director of DKE.
Tom Halley, a finalist for the job said, “Doug has done a fine job under less than fine circumstances. I wish him success.” Norm Myatt another finalist said: “Doug has a proven dedication and commitment to DKE, and I am confident that his leadership will be effective.”
Being a runner, Doug hit the ground running as Interim Executive Director on October 1, 2009. He quickly formulated a “Vision for DKE” which has been adopted by the Board. Between October 1 and March 10th, he visited Mu Chi (Maryville), Tau Delta (Sewanee), Gamma (Vanderbilt), Chi (Ole Miss), Psi (Alabama), ZZ (LSU), Iota (Centre - reactivation), Phi Alpha (British Columbia), Beta Tau (U Victoria - colonization), Omicron (Michigan) , Phi (Yale), Beta Gamma (NYU), Phi Chi (Rutgers-reactivation), Sigma Kappa (Michigan State), Zeta (Princeton), Psi Delta (Wake Forest), Epsilon Rho (Duke), Beta (UNC), Omega Chi (Texas), and Tau Chi (Texas A&M – colonization); spending time with chapter officers, alumni groups and school administrations. He chose in many instances to stay in the chapter houses with the men of DKE to get to know them better.
In addition to his Chapter visits, Doug traveled to New York City where he attended a chapter workshop with Chi Rho (Bloomsburg), Phi Chi (Rutgers) colony, and attended a Deke Club of New York function in December. He also visited Theta Zeta (UC-Berkley) to present the 2009 Lion Trophy. During his west coast swing, he attended the Kappa Epsilon (Washington) 100th Anniversary Banquet. He has also been able to attend a Baton Rouge alumni luncheon and a New Orleans alumni luncheon, as well as a couple of DKE Club functions.
No wonder Rampant Lion Trustee, Bob Tuller, Theta Zeta (UC-Berkeley) ‘56, says of Doug “He is personable and very energetic. Doug has a good speaking style. He relates very well to college-age people. When you listen to him, you believe him. He’s a stand up guy and perfect for this job. We are very strongly in favor of his being the Executive Director.”
Here’s what Doug, himself, had to say when asked about his term as Interim Director: “My biggest impression by far is the incredible spirit and enthusiasm for DKE that exists. Every time I visit a chapter I get blown away by the quality of our undergraduates and how much they love DKE. Dekes are such a cohesive group of guys; even though we come from all different backgrounds and regions, we all have an immediate common bond. Dekes sure do like to have fun, I see it everywhere.”
He added “I've noticed how important it is for a chapter to have a strong alumni association.”
K.C. White, Asst Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students at LSU said “..... Several members of the LSU staff had the opportunity to meet with Doug..... He asked compelling questions and he listened. He listened to undergraduates, alumni and members of the University community. Doug brought new insight and perspective to the conversation .... I believe we are off to a great start with DKE and wish Doug and DKE the greatest success....”
From Canada, Brent Tynan, Phi Alpha (British Columbia) has told us “Doug is committed to rebuilding good relations between DKE International and its Chapters and Alumni. ....There is an urgent need to establish DKE International as a credible, effective and trusted organization around which Chapters and Dekes of all ages can rally. I've observed Doug in action and his rapport and the respect he shows for our opinions and needs are very welcome."
Outgoing Omicron President, Tim Lewis says “I am very pleased with Doug’s election. He really wants to be involved, not only at the International level, but in the affairs of the Chapters. He’s made a real effort to get to know the Actives at Michigan, and I’ve heard him on the telephone contacting brothers at other chapters. Doug is the right person for the job.”
Lin Hanson, Omicron (Michigan) ‘59, President of the Rampant Lion Foundation adds: “I am amazed at his energy, his self-sacrifice, and his humility.”
Doug IS, in equal parts, the Gentleman, the Scholar, and the Jolly Good Fellow. There is no doubt that he has set out to “...........to Secure to Merit its Due Reward,” and we bet he’ll do it, too!
