Statement from DKEHQ on ASU
May 1st, 2013
Contrary to many media reports, in the early hours of April 28, several men staged two separate, unprovoked and armed attacks on members of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at Arizona State University. These attackers entered the home of DKE Brothers, an apartment complex where many of them live. No fraternity party was held at the apartment complex on that night. The Deke fraternity men tried to defend themselves from these outrageous attacks, but six of them were injured and admitted to the hospital, where one still remains in intensive care. Five of the suspected attackers have been arrested by Tempe Police, but one remains at large. DKE Fraternity and the ASU Chapter are cooperating fully with the City of Tempe Police and ASU investigations.Additional Points:- The Deke students who moved into the off-campus apartment complex in the fall of 2012 immediately became concerned for their security and paid for gates and and security cameras to be installed at the facility.- DKE members have already signed-up to participate in new, on-campus Greek Housing offered by Arizona State and DKE Fraternity commends ASU for taking this step in moving Greek organizations into a more secure living environment. For more information, please click www.asudkenews....

DEKES in the Maritime Community: Louisiana's Governor Bobby Jindal has made three (3) recent appointments to the Board of Commissioners, Port of New Orleans (Dock Board).
February 11th, 2013
Louisiana's Governor Bobby Jindal has made three (3) recent appointments to the Board of Commissioners, Port of New Orleans (Dock Board). Brothers Robert "Rusty" Barkerding, Jr., ZZ"63, Mike Kearney, ZZ" 65 and Scott Cooper, Psi, '99 will now serve together on this very important body of maritime leaders. Interestingly they follow in the steps of DKE brothers Angus Cooper, Psi '64, and Tommy Westfeldt, ZZ'74 who have completed terms on the Dock Board. The Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans governs the Port of New Orleans. The Board sets policies and regulates traffic and commerce of the Port. The Board is made up of seven commissioners. They are unsalaried and serve five-year staggered terms. The governor of Louisiana appoints board members from a list of three nominees submitted by 19 local business, civic, labor, education, and maritime groups. With the Mississippi River moving about 500 million tons of cargo each year including chemicals, coal, timber, iron, steel and more than half of the nations grain exports, the Port of New Orleans is Americas gateway to the global market. New Orleans has been a center for international trade since 1718 when the French founded it. Today, the Port of New Orleans is at the center of the worlds busiest port complex Louisianas Lower Mississippi River. Its proximity to the American Midwest via a 14,500-mile inland waterway system makes New Orleans the port of choice for the movement of cargoes. The Port of New Orleans is the only deepwater port in the United States served by six class one railroads. This gives port users direct and economical rail service to or from anywhere in the country. Our three Deke brothers Barkerding, Cooper, and Kearney are to be commended and applauded for serving in these important and responsible positions. Note: In the Port of Mobile, AL, the Alabama State Port Authority's Director/CEO is James K. "Jimmy" Lyons, Psi'70 and Angus Cooper, III, Psi'99 serves on its Board of Directo...

Phi Alpha Wins 2012 Lion Trophy
August 9th, 2012
DKE extends its most enthusiastic congratulations to the Phi Alpha (University of British Columbia) Chapter, who, at this year's Convention, was bestowed the coveted Lion Trophy in recognition of the Chapter's achievements for the 2011-12 academic year. Hosted by the Psi Chapter at the University of Alabama, Delta Kappa Epsilon's biennial Convention took place in Tuscaloosa, Alabama from July 25-28.
No stranger to the Lion Trophy, this is Phi Alpha's fifth win for the award that recognizes the all-around strongest DKE chapter in the United States and Canada. Having been graded in the areas of Scholarship, Alumni Relations, Community Service, and Chapter Improvement, the Phi Alpha Chapter scored the highest cumulative marks of the 15 applicants. The chapter's last Lion Trophy win was in 2005.
The Convention banquet was held in "The Zone" in the University of Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium, where guests were treated to panoramic views of both the football field and the Psi DKE house (being situated directly across the road from the stadium) and treated to a keynote address by brother Terry Stewart (Phi Chi '69), CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Along with the Lion Trophy, several other prestigious awards were given out: the 2010 William M. Henderson Award (for outstanding alumni involvement to a Deke chapter) was given to William Kavan (Theta Upsilon '92) and the 2011 Henderson Award was awarded to Matthew McQueen (Beta Gamma '03), the newly-established Nick Napolitano Award for Presidential Excellence, named for the fallen brother and Wake Forest president who gave his life as he rescued a drowning fraternity brother, was given to Tucker Howard (Epsilon Rho '12), and the Charles O. Blaisdell DKE Leadership Award was given to Donald Kleckner (Gamma Phi '13). Also recognized were the year's best Deke Quarterly article, submitted by the Beta Tau Chapter, and the newly elected undergraduate board member, Davis Vaughn (Psi '14).
Overall, this year's Convention was a resounding success; the number of undergraduate delegates attending nearly doubled the 2010 numbers, and the reviews of the daily educational sessions have been overwhelmingly positive. The lessons and memories of the 2012 DKE Convention in Tuscaloosa will undoubtedly impact those in attendance and their respective chapters for years to co...

Lambda of DKE hosts 3rd annual ALS Benefit at Kenyon
April 6th, 2012
From the Kenyon Collegian:Without stepping foot in Gambier, Arnold Schwarzenegger figured prominently at this years Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) benefit at the Village Inn (VI). A poster signed by Schwarzenegger served as first prize for the trivia competition held at the beginning of the evening, which raised money for ALS by charging $15 per trivia team. Now in its third year, the Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE)-hosted benefit raises money to help fight the disease and raise awareness about its effects, which can be expensive to treat. It is becoming a Kenyon tradition, said Professor of Political Science Pamela Jensen, who donated the poster.[The DKEs] have called attention to something by invoking our reaction to beloved people in the community, but also have raised the profile of ALS.The benefit honors Professor Emeritus of Drama Tom Turgeon, who is still battling ALS, and Elaine Gray, the stepmother of former DKE president Nate Gray 10, who died of the disease.Associate Professor of Drama Andrew Reinert called Turgeon one of his favorite colleagues in an email. To my mind, Tom embodies all the best qualities of Kenyon: hes passionate about learning, hes kind, hes joyous, and hes modest, he said. The DKEs are particularly connected to this cause not only because of Grays stepmother and because Turgeon taught at Kenyon, but also because Turgeons son, Chuck Turgeon 93, was a DKE at Kenyon as well. The DKEs host the event to spread awareness in addition to raising money. Its really important to remind [students] that were not just Kenyon students, were citizens of a larger and more important cause, said DKE community service chair Abe Nelson 14.With the help of the Epsilon Delta Mu (EDM) sorority, which has handled publicity and advertising each year, Nelson estimated that they raised about $500 in addition to the $2,095.28 collected at the event, thanks to donations made directly to the ALS foundation.Though the first ALS benefit brought in almost twice the amount raised this year, Nelson said the event was more successful, not least because awareness increases every year. I just dont think we have a person whos as remarkable as Nate Gray, Nelson said. I was worried at first because I didnt see a way that we could feasibly make as much money as we did last year, but I had a great conversation with Nate where he said, I dont care how much money you make. A ton of people who wouldnt usually come to something like this are here now.The sisters of EDM played a major role in getting the word out about the event. EDMs placed signs displaying facts about ALS along Middle Path and distributed lollipops with additional facts. I think we could do more to advertise earlier, said EDM community service chair Elise Shattuck 14. But I think [the signs and lollipops] work really well. The size of the crowd that descended on the VI also posed some difficulty. Still, both Nelson and DKE Cody Shankman 12 were excited to see so many attendees. I would love to see more donations from students, Shankman said. I think many Kenyon students are a little hesitant to give five dollars at the door because were not used to that, but I think a lot of students here can manage to do it and I think its a good cause.VI owner Gerald Kerry has been happy to offer up his establishment for the cause. Id really like to see it grow, Kerry said. Maybe next year we could do fundraiser trivia on a Wednesday night and then a VI night at the end of the week with music or some other mix of events.Though this combination of trivia and music has been successful so far, Kerry looks forward to finding the perfect blend for attracting more supporters. We really appreciate anything we can do with [the] student community as a whole, particularly if its for a good cause, Kerry said.Professor of Humanities Timothy Shutt has contributed to the benefit by serving as trivia host for the past two years and creating his own challenging questions on topics ranging from cephalopods to constellations. Its something I can do, Shutt said. [Turgeon] and I were colleagues together for more than 20 years, and I like and respect him still. Well definitely do the benefit with the VI next year, and hopefully we can, Nelson said. With the VIs participation and new ideas to increase community involvement not only from students but also from local businesses, Nelson and Kerry hope for even more success in years to come. [Nate Gray] was at the event this year and he said he was really happy, Nelson said. Next year I hope we can make it even bigg...

Grinder Cup for Multiple Sclerosis is a success at Delta Phi, University of Alberta
March 4th, 2012
The snowiest winters that Edmonton could offer could not stop a pack of Canadian Dekes from hosting the 3rd annual Grinder Cup on the last weekend of February. The Grinder Cup for MS, a hockey tournament benefitting the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada was hosted this year at the Pleasantview rink and community league in South Edmonton.
MS Society of Canada
Thanks to Brother Maclean, the recently initiated brothers were able to run a barbeque featuring the ever-popular "Grinder Dog", swamped by the players as the brothers cleared the rink of snow in between games in what can be described as near-blizzard like conditions.
The wintery conditions did inevitably affect attendance at the event, but over 150 people still joined in on the evening's festivities in the community hall for a terrific weekend!Special thanks goes out to Brother Mitchell Bennett for his efforts in organizing the tournament. His work, along with the contributions and support of the rest of the Delta Phi brotherhood, resulted in $5000 raised for the MS society, a remarkable contribution for an event that is only in its third year of existence. The men are looking forward to building on their contribution in the upcoming MS Bike Tour, in which teams of Delta Phi Dekes will ride more than 180 kilometers in two days to support the MS Society of Canada. The Dekes have a goal raising $10,000 in total.Lastly, we did hear that Brother Bennett took a slap-shot puck to the eye at the event, but came right back to the event despite a swollen face and some time in the ER. He has been assured that there will be no permanent damage. Feel better soon brother!
Thanks to everything that you guys do and we look forward to seeing the Grinder Cup continue to grow over the foreseeable futur...

Dutch Prince, Berkeley Deke, Johan Friso
February 17th, 2012
From BBC News, February 17th, 2012Dutch Prince Johan Friso is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by an avalanche in the Austrian resort of Lech, say officials. Officials said the prince, 43, was buried under the snow for about 15 minutes before being rescued. He was resuscitated at the scene and taken to hospital in Innsbruck, where officials said he was stable but his condition was "still life-threatening". Prince Friso is the second son of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.Several members of the royal family had been on holiday together in Lech, in the western province of Vorarlberg in the Austrian Alps. Prime Minister Mark Rutte confirmed that the queen was there but had not been involved in the incident. Stefan Jochum, a spokesman for the ski resort, said the prince had been skiing with a small group off the marked pistes when the avalanche hit shortly after midday local time. No-one else was injured, he said. In a statement, the Dutch government said the prince was in intensive care, and that "doctors treating him describe the prince's condition as stable, but his life remains at risk".The statement said it would be several days before a full prognosis could be given.Deadly seasonThe Austrian Alps have been hit by particularly heavy snow this winter and numerous avalanches. Parts of Voralberg were cut off by the snow this week. Several people have been killed across Europe this year in avalanches.Prince Friso gave up his rights to the Dutch throne in 2004, when he married human rights activist Mabel Wisse Smit. The government had refused to give its support to the marriage, because the couple had given misleading information about the bride's relationship with a dead gangster. Under Dutch law, royals who aspire to the throne must receive permission from the government and parliament to marry as the cabinet will bear responsibility for their actions. The couple have two young daughters, Luana and Zaria. For more, please visit:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17077...

DKE Mourns Loss of Brother Joe Paterno
January 23rd, 2012
Dekes all over the world are greatly saddened today by the loss of Brother Joseph Vincent Paterno, Upsilon, Brown '50.Known world-wide as one of the greatest college football coaches ever, Brother Paterno was remembered by his fellow coaches and former players as much more than that. His impact on the individuals he coached and led, on Penn State University, on the State of Pennsylvania, and on college football in general will never be equaled. A man of high character and integrity, he always emphasized to his players the need for a strong moral character, the value of hard work, and the importance of focusing on scholastics.Matt Millen (PSU '79) said that football was only a vehicle for Joe to teach him and his teammates about how to lead their lives as honorable men.Joe was proud of his membership in DKE, and only recently had a chance to visit with eight men of the Phi Rho Chapter who came to his house to deliver a letter of support; in a delightful and emotional visit with his young Brothers in DKE, he spoke of his fond memories of DKE at Brown, and recalled his meetings with several other well-known Deke Brothers such as George H.W. Bush and George Steinbrenner, at which the subject of their Deke memberships always came up. He even chimed in when, encouraged by SuePa, the young Deke men struck up a chorus of "Son of a DKE."Joe embodied the values of DKE, in every respect a gentleman, a scholar, and a jolly good fellow. The entire Brotherhood of Delta Kappa Epsilon is united today in expressing our profound sadness and our sincerest condolences to the Paterno family for the loss of their husband and father, and our Brother, Joseph Vincent Pater...

Children celebrate with Kenyon Dekes
December 13th, 2011
From the Kenyon Collegiate...
"Through the crowd of excited children and chattering parents at last Wednesday's Shawn Kelly Memorial Holiday Party, Taylor Hartwell '14 of The Ransom Notes burst into song with the beginning cries of "The Circle of Life." The famous song from The Lion King immediately drew the attention of hundreds of Disney-loving children present at the 21st annual Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) party. They turned their attention to the stage, resting their scissors, marshmallows and snowflakes. For a minute, Gund Commons seemed to become quieter, until eventually, the kids returned to their festivities.
The DKEs hold the Shawn Kelly Memorial Holiday Party every year to honor the party's namesake, one of Kenyon's best swimmers and a fellow DKE member. The event has grown in size and popularity, with 386 children attending this year.
In partnership with Head Start, a leading organization in early childhood development and education, especially for low-income families, the DKEs provided dinner, face painting, ornament decorating and other Christmas-themed activities. This event included a visit from Santa and distribution of a total of 400 Christmas presents, neatly wrapped by the DKE brothers.
At the party, one girl approached Abraham Nelson '14, the coordinator of the event this year, and said, "I want a reindeer on my neck," gesturing to the face paint choices displayed on the table. Her face was decorated with a reindeer, in addition to a star and a striped candy cane on either cheek. 'That's going to be hard," Nelson said. Unfazed, she sat down and lifted her head up, awaiting the addition. Three other children patiently lined up behind her.
The Shawn Kelly Memorial Holiday Party, through repeated successes, has become a staple Kenyon College event, according to Nelson.
"[It] is the biggest student-sponsored event of the year," Nelson said. "It's something we're really proud of and that's why we've been doing it for 21 years...

Total control: Quarterback Patrick Witt talks football, Rhodes
November 15th, 2011
"Welcome to the palace," says Patrick Witt, JE '12, by way of apology.
The staircase of the DKE fraternity house is strewn with Styrofoam cups. There is a shoe on top of a bookshelf, a coffee mug perched on a fence post. Three couches sit on the front porch, their cushions sagging, the pillows mismatched.
He sighs. "I'm sorry the common areas are so messy. My room's the cleanest in the house."
We climb up three flights of stairs. Patrick looms large in the narrow space, a calm giant. At the top, he pushes open his door, and I have the sudden impression that perhaps I should take off my shoes.

Chapter Visits
November 11th, 2011
As of October 1st, staff members have made 41 chapter visits during the fall term, spending over 76 days in the field (combined). Chapter consultants, who develop the closest bonds with and are tasked with the health and improvement of Deke chapters, spend about 2.5 days on each visit and are usually on the road for at least three weeks at a time.
During their visits, our consultants meet with active Deke Brothers to get a feel for ways in which the chapter's performance can be improved and to understand how International can help out. They also meet with and gain perspective from Greek Life Officers and nearby alumni officers. All in all, the time they spend with the Actives, sharing ideas or best-practices and forming bonds across chapter boundaries, is most critical to the health and improvement of our chapters.
Tom Hudson, '11, started working for in June. His travels started at , Penn State in late August, and he has already seen 17 chapters. Tom said, "Every chapter I visit, I pick up at least a couple of great ideas that I can then share with other chapters. The exposure to so many chapters of different sizes and at different campuses across North America makes me more effective in cross-pollinating the best ideas from one chapter to the next. Our chapters are also really interested to learn about what the others are doing, so sometimes they just like to hear stories about what's going on around . I also encourage them to go visit other chapters; that's always a lot of fun when Dekes from different campuses get together. It's been an amazing five weeks so far and it's been a really great experience for me to have some positive impact on the chapters I've visited."
Our second year consultant, Ron Li, '10, estimates that he drove 13,000 miles last year and flew over 24,000 miles on his travels through 2010-2011. He says, "Getting to revisit some of the chapters that I've already built a strong relationship with has been personally very fulfilling. On top of following up with past projects and brainstorming new ones with chapters, I get to ask guys, for example, how their time abroad was or how their summer internship turned-out. The personal connection that I have built with every chapter that I visited (which will be all of them by this year's end) has turned out to be even stronger this year, and I know that I will continue to be a mentor-figure to many of the undergraduate Dekes even after my time as a consultant is done."
We International, will endeavor to visit and consult with every chapter at least one time per academic semester. Contact Doug, Ron, or Tom to find-out when a staff member will be visiting you...
Sigma Alpha Celebrates 40th Anniversary
November 11th, 2011
Over 75 Sigma Alpha alumni gathered in Roanoke, VA over the weekend of September 30th - October 1st, to celebrate 's 40th anniversary as a chapter as well as the 70th anniversary of the local fraternity that preceded at Virginia Tech. Several members of that local chapter, called Delta Kappa Sigma (they were called "Deeks"), were also in attendance, as they've stayed very involved in the chapter. The Dekes (and Deeks) in attendance had a great time. Several alumni from various eras, who recounted funny stories from the past, enlivened Friday's banquet. On Saturday, the Brothers enjoyed a pregame party at the 100 year old house, followed by the football game against Clems...
Amazing Recruitment Success at Theta Upsilon
November 11th, 2011
Dekes at Arizona State pulled off an amazing coup this fall, by netting a pledge class of 52 men! Theta Upsilon, reactivated in 2009, has taken a giant leap into the future, by pledging 30 uninitiated men from a chapter of Sigma Pi that went under. These men wanted to continue their Greek experience and decided to "move up" to KE. In addition, Theta Upsilon actives also added another 22 men from open rush, to form the largest pledge class anywhere in recent KE history (at least that this reporter is aware of!) Congrats to Theta Upsil...
Psi Mourns Loss of Moe Cook
November 11th, 2011
Moulton "Moe" Cook passed away quietly at his home in Tuscaloosa, AL, on September 25, 2011, after a brief illness. He was born on June 1, 1944 in Forkland, AL, to the late John Cook, Sr. and the late Minnie Jenkins Cook. Moe graduated from Druid High School in Tuscaloosa in 1962 and attended college in Texas. He served his country with distinction in the U.S. Army, including a tour in Vietnam. For over 40 years Moe was a treasured employee, and initiated member, of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity at the University of Alabama.
During his tenure with Delta Kappa Epsilon, Moe helped nearly a thousand boys on their road to becoming young men, and considered this his life's calling, second only to being a loving father and husband. In 1997, the U.S. Senate celebrated Moe's lifetime of service to his family, his country, and Delta Kappa Epsilon, by flying an American flag atop the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. That flag remains on permanent display inside the Delta Kappa Epsilon house. One of Moe's favorite Bible verses comes from Ecclesiastes 1:8, "the eye is not satisfied merely with seeing." Moe saw deeply into life, but more importantly, he made sure those who knew and loved him did so as well, and they are better men and women as a result.
Moe is survived by his wife, Mary Cook; two sons, Damion Moulton Cook and Kadarius Moulton Cook; two daughters, Karmisha Weaver and Karnisha Weaver; his mother-in-law, Thelma Weaver; two brothers-in-law, Henry Weaver and Willie Colvin; three sisters-in-law, Lois Weaver, Alice Moore, and Thelma Little; and a host of other extended family and frien...
The Rampant Lion Returns to Troy University!
November 11th, 2011
DKE is very proud to announce that we have re-chartered our Pi Beta Chapter at Troy University. The reactivation effort started this summer when DKE was invited back to campus by the Dean of Students, Herbert Reeves, after the Pi Beta alumni had contacted the Troy administration expressing interest in a return.
The alumni then swung into action, hiring two recently graduated Dekes from Mu Chi-Maryville to develop and manage the rush program. The two, Andrew Henley and Chaz Elrod, were critical to the effort. They spent the summer in Troy paving the way for DKE's return by attending freshman orientation sessions. School has now started, and DKE has 11 new pledges at Pi Beta as a result of their hard work!
Welcome Back Pi Beta DK...
