Phi Alpha Wins 2012 Lion Trophy
August 9th, 2012

DKE extends its most enthusiastic congratulations to the Phi Alpha (University of British Columbia) Chapter, who, at this year's Convention, was bestowed the coveted Lion Trophy in recognition of the Chapter's achievements for the 2011-12 academic year. Hosted by the Psi Chapter at the University of Alabama, Delta Kappa Epsilon's biennial Convention took place in Tuscaloosa, Alabama from July 25-28.

No stranger to the Lion Trophy, this is Phi Alpha's fifth win for the award that recognizes the all-around strongest DKE chapter in the United States and Canada. Having been graded in the areas of Scholarship, Alumni Relations, Community Service, and Chapter Improvement, the Phi Alpha Chapter scored the highest cumulative marks of the 15 applicants. The chapter's last Lion Trophy win was in 2005.

The Convention banquet was held in "The Zone" in the University of Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium, where guests were treated to panoramic views of both the football field and the Psi DKE house (being situated directly across the road from the stadium) and treated to a keynote address by brother Terry Stewart (Phi Chi '69), CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Along with the Lion Trophy, several other prestigious awards were given out: the 2010 William M. Henderson Award (for outstanding alumni involvement to a Deke chapter) was given to William Kavan (Theta Upsilon '92) and the 2011 Henderson Award was awarded to Matthew McQueen (Beta Gamma '03), the newly-established Nick Napolitano Award for Presidential Excellence, named for the fallen brother and Wake Forest president who gave his life as he rescued a drowning fraternity brother, was given to Tucker Howard (Epsilon Rho '12), and the Charles O. Blaisdell DKE Leadership Award was given to Donald Kleckner (Gamma Phi '13). Also recognized were the year's best Deke Quarterly article, submitted by the Beta Tau Chapter, and the newly elected undergraduate board member, Davis Vaughn (Psi '14).

Overall, this year's Convention was a resounding success; the number of undergraduate delegates attending nearly doubled the 2010 numbers, and the reviews of the daily educational sessions have been overwhelmingly positive. The lessons and memories of the 2012 DKE Convention in Tuscaloosa will undoubtedly impact those in attendance and their respective chapters for years to come.
