Sigma Kappa 150th Anniversary

10/12/2007 - 10/14/2007

Recently, the Sigma Kappa Chapter of DKE celebrated its ten year anniversary with a weekend-long celebration for founders, alumni, and actives.

From a founding on April 18th, 1998, Sigma Kappa, with independent. strong leadership and Deke traditions to guide it is now recognized as a leader on Michigan State University's campus. Most recently, Sigma Kappa has completed its transition into MSU's Greek community and moved into one of the largest and most sought-after houses on campus.

On Saturday, April 19th, the chapter held a formal banquet for founders, alumni, and active members. Present were two of Sigma Kappa's founders, Nick Pence (founding President) and Justin Hollander (founding Treasurer), as well as dozens of more recent alumni and all the active members. Also notably present were Charles Liken, who played a pivotal role in founding the chapter and has since been very active in its success, representatives of DKE International.

The diversity of Sigma Kappa's membership is never more apparent than when so many are gathered in one place, and it was incredible for brothers old and new to instantly bond over a common pride in their chapter. After dinner and drinks, Brother Pence addressed the group with very inspiring words regarding the founding of Sigma Kappa and its very first ideals and achievements. It became apparent that the current membership and the original membership had a common philosophy. Brother Pence shared a story that summed up the chapter's success: Marc Hoffman, another founding brother, was involved in theater. Although many of the other founders had other priorities, they fully supported their fellow Deke and were loyal in their attendance of his functions. It is this spirit of diverse interests and ability, but a strong brotherhood of support. that has made the Chapter what it is today.

After Brother Pence's words, everyone present was given the opportunity to introduce himself and say a few words. This was perhaps the most moving part of the weekend, as all of the chapter's many personalities were visibly on display. All attending came away from the event with pride for history and a strong optimism for the future. Alumni and actives went back to the Deke House for tours of the facilities and the year's final social event, the legendary Toga Party. On Sunday, April 20th , the chapter held a formal, ceremonial meeting, in lieu of its typical chapter meeting. This served to close the book on an inspiring weekend, an exciting and incredible year, and an astounding decade of excellence at Michigan State. The Sigma Kappa Chapter enters its next era with a strong foundation, optimistic spirit, and positive excitement for the great success that is to come.
